Avoid means this ingredient may hurt your hair. If you see this ingredient in a hair product, it's best to put it down and walk away.

It is sometimes very frustrating to weed out truth from fiction and your insight is greatly appreciated. I wish you were able to tackle or at least highlight some of the inaccuracies in the link above. My question is : were you able to conclude that TEA while a pH adjuster does not have drying effects at all or was that one of the inaccuracies you were talking about? I could not highlight them all because they were too many examples 1. Unless the product is of single ingredient, it is not possible to say whether the product is overall drying.

Pour pure ethanol on the hair and you have a different effect. The chemistry of how a product works is more than a single ingredient. There are links which are spurious e. If I am honest, it is very possible to link any ingredient to cancer but it is more important to explain why there is a possible link, how can it be mitigated and leave the consumer to decide for themselves. The point is supposed to be that TEA does react with acids to neutralize the ph and it because of that forms salts.

I was going by the order of the ingredients, but either way the fact of the matter is the relationship of these two ingredients is that they will neutralize the other. Whether acid or base is added to the other first, both will neutralize the other. Since Polyacrylate is less in amount than the TEA in this ingredient list it is fair to assume it is being used to lower the ph of the TEA.

It is going form the same compound so it really does not make a difference either way. It is that alcohol characteristic that makes the difference whether the product containing TEA is water based or oil based. Amino alcohols like ethanolamine themselves are in fact drying once denatured. I also never said that the denaturation due to proteins was the exact same as denatured alcohol. I stated that denaturation of alcohol due to heating like discussed in the post, is actually different than if the alcohol was already denatured before adding it to the gel.

That is why I included the photos of the aubrey organics gel. It contains denatured alcohol and a made a point to specifically contrast it with the type of denaturing I was talking about.

I emphasized that though they are both being denatured, the way it is denatured no heating, before heating, or after heating, etc is what matters. How exactly an alcohol was denatured before being added to the gel is kind of irrelevant because I was talking specifically about denaturing due to heat when done in a specific order, to get the clear gel result.

So what you are saying doesn't conflict with anything I said. There may not be only one way to get gel to look Crystal clear, but the parameters of what I was talking about in this post were extremely specific so don't try to over generalize it.

I said over and over that if the gel actually contains TEA or alcohol and it is crystal clear, it will always contain an acid along with it then you can assume it has been heated to be denatured. There may be other ways to get gels crystal clear, but if they don't contain TEA or alcohol, then they are not what I am talking about. BTW you say you have made crystal clear gels before but I am not inclined to believe that unless you show what product it is you are talking about.

How should I just take your word for it? Provide proof, pictures. How do I know your "crystal clear" isn't just slightly opalescent or foggy like the aubrey organic or even giovanni LA styling gel? Plus you never specified the ingredients in said product, so it may not even apply to what I am saying.Discussions Activity Sign In. April in Formulating. Greetings, and thanks all for your help. Im having problems when adding Sodium lauryl sulphate to a gel made with neutralized carbopol, when i add a little of sls the gel lose the thickness, i dont have a Phmeter and i want to know if the problem is that im getting a over neutralized solution and if i can use citric acid to get the correct ph.

Chemist77 Member, PCF student. April Did u study the literature of carbomer to see if it is compatible with strong surfactants nd electrolytes???

And which grade of carbomer have u used??? And what product are you trying to formulate?? Is there a sodium chloride free claim??? Thanks chemist for your answer, first I must admit that I'm not a chemist and I know almost nothing about cosmetics, I'm trying to make a sodium chloride free shampoo, using mainly sls, i think that I'm using carbopolbut I can't confirm.

I'd read some lubrizol formulas that Includes carbopol and sls but I can't make they get thick. Am I doing something wrong? Can I use carboximetilcelulose instead hec? Carbomer again, eh? Thanks for all the comments on the other thread. Luiscuevasil-your question helped me understand carbomer vs cellulose, esp trying to build viscosity in a surfactant.

A hair styling gel is designed to help hold hair in a fixed shape. It is a clear product that is smoothed through the hair, coating it, and setting up a rigid film that inhibits movement. A well-formulated gel will remain flexible when initially applied but will become stiff when it dries. The primary ingredient that makes a styling gel hold the hair is a styling polymer. These polymers give good hold while still being water soluble enough to be easily washed out of the hair.

The other ingredient that is critical to a styling gel is the thickening system. There are a number of cosmetic thickening agents that can be used but the most common for styling gels is Carbomer. Carbomer is an acrylic polymer that has an interesting characteristic.

It is acidic when put into a water solution. When the polymer is neutralized with an ingredient like TEA, it causes cross-linking within the polymer which in turn creates the gel. The rest of the ingredients in styling gels include colorants, solubilizers, solvents, emollients, spreading agents, preservatives, and colorants. While important, they have varying degrees of effect on the performance of the product. Carbomers are white, fluffy powders but are frequently used as gels in cosmetics and personal care products. Carbomers can be found in a wide variety of product types including skin, hair, nail, and makeup products, as well as dentifrices. Carbomers are thickening agents that help control the viscosity and flow of cosmetic products.

They also help distribute and suspend insoluble solids into liquid, and prevent the oil and liquid parts of a solution from separating. They have the ability to absorb and retain water, and can swell up to times their original volume when dispersed in water. Generally, this class of ingredients is used in gel-like formulations because it forms a colloidal, mucilage-like consistency when mixed in water.

This ingredient is contained in a wide range of personal care products such as styling gel, facial moisturizer, sunscreen, shampoo, anti-aging treatment, eye cream, cleanser and scrubs. This ingredient has been assessed as safe to use in cosmetic products. Home Menu.Carbomer is a white fluffy powder which when neutralised creates clear gels and brings consistency and flow enhancement to products.

Cosmetic Formulation Basics – Styling Gel

Used in creams, lotions and shower gels imparts a silky feel. Carbomer is the key ingredient in hand sanitisers as it creates the gel that thickens the alcohol and water mix. Carbomer is one of the rare ingredients that was formulated for Cosmetic use.

Most ingredients were originally intended for other uses and found their way into Cosmetic Use, however Carbomer was always formulated for Cosmetic Use. Although not a "natural" product, Carbomer has no documented safety problems and is listed safe by the Cosmetic Independant Review. Because of the way Carbomer works, it is very rare for anybody to have any reaction to Carbomer. Carbomer not only thickens a product, but will bring stability and texture enhancement.

By changing the usage level, you can create a stable free flowing product to a very stiff hair gel. Carbomer always has to be neutralised to work and this is most commonly done with Sodium hydroxide. Once neutralised correctly, Sodium hydroxide will not be present in your final formulation.

Carbomer must be thoroughly mixed or hydrated before use, otherwise it will not work properly and has the risk of formation of lumps in the final formulation. Carbomer once fully hydrated is neutralised with Sodium hydroxide to bring the pH to 6 or greater.

CARBOMER problems formulating shampoo

At this point the Carbomer turns into a Gel structure. Carbomer is especially formulated for the demands of Cosmetic production and is not intended for internal use.

Care should be taken during the neutralisation process to avoid contact with Sodium hydroxide on the skin. In order to keep consistancy, sheer the amount of mixing of Carbomer based products should be kept the same as viscosity of Carbomer based gels decreases the more Sheer that is given to the final product.
